Level 1
IT'S A WORLD OF DISCOVERY IN LEVEL 1 AT KALINDA

Our Prep children discover and learn so many new things and new skills during their first year of school. They learn about school life, about themselves, about their world and about how they learn.
The Level 1 program provides a balance of structured literacy and numeracy sessions, and a Play-based Learning program on Discovery Days. Our Integrated Studies topic provides a new focus area each term.
Our students are also involved in specialist programs each week, in the areas of Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Physical Education, Environmental Science and Japanese.

Discovery Days
These are a highlight of the week in Level 1, and you can see and hear the happy buzz of children all busily engaged in a huge range of open-ended tasks and activities across the whole of the Prep learning area. The shop, the cubby, the trains, the guinea pigs, construction and creative materials, and the Cooking Corner are some of the areas the children can choose each week.
We are fortunate to have wonderful parent helpers, who come along to help with special activities each week, and to those talented chefs who run the very popular cooking program.
Term 3 News
Can I Be A Scientist? This term’s topic highlights the importance of science in everyday life, and it introduces the children to a range of science areas, such as magnets, floating and sinking, rocks, and chemical science. Our budding young scientists are involved in many and varied hands-on investigations. They wonder, question, predict, test and record their results and also undertake their own independent scientific investigation. Visits by Scientists and experts enhance the children’s learning in this fun, interactive topic.
Our swimming program is well underway. The Friday swimming routine is running smoothly and the children are enthusiastic about their lessons. Thank you to the helpers who come with us on the bus, and to those who help with dressing at the pool. Your help is much appreciated.
We are pleased to continue the Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) in Term 3, and this is due to the support of our PMP helpers every week and our dedicated PMP Co-ordinator. The activities are becoming more advanced, and the children are enjoying the challenge and developing their skills and co-ordination.
The Magic 100 Words have continued to be a wonderful and exciting learning tool. The children are very keen to learn their words and move onto the next colour, and they are showing real progress in their literacy skills. Thank you for your support at home with regular practise of these words, together with take-home reading. Keep up the great work.
Level 1 looks forward to even more fabulous Learning and Discoveries in the second half of the year.
