Level 3
Level 3 2009 Integrated Units
Our Term 2 integrated unit was called, ‘On the Road Again’ and specifically looked at Victoria and mapping generally. In this unit, students investigated the impact of Australia’s unique geography on the way of life of the people who live and work near, or in the Great Dividing Range. In particular students investigated aspects of the history, industry, resources, tourist attractions and ways of life of people who live in different regions of Victoria.
The Term 3 integrated unit was known as ‘We are one, but we are many’.
As part of delivering this unit we visited both Sovereign Hill and the Immigration Museum, had an old fashioned school day and investigated our own family histories. The aims behind all the activities were that :
· Our children develop an understanding as to what it means to be Australian.
· The students gain an awareness of the experience of people from different cultural groups migrating to Australia.
· The children gain a history of migration to Australia.
· They begin to understand the effects of migration.
· The students develop strategies to help people when they migrate in the future.
· And that our children understand that migration is important to the future of Australia.
Our Term 4 integrated unit is titled, “Technology and Me’ which investigates the myriad of ways technology is involved our lives. We are specifically looking at ways in which the students presently use technology and aim to expand and improve their skills and knowledge base for those. Some elements are: the continued discovery of all that is available from our interactive whiteboards with its supporting software; using flip video cameras and IPods; creating movies together; interacting over the Internet via emails and Super Club; investigating programs such as Audacity, Garage band, IMovie, and so on. The students have been working individually, in pairs and as teams. In all situations they have discussed, negotiated and compromised with growing social skills. They are formally designing, creating and assessing their tasks, just as people are required to do with ICT tools and skills in workplaces and the community generally.
