Performing Arts

Kalinda has a vibrant Performing Arts program which offers a wide variety of learning opportunities.

KEY LEARNING PROGRAM

Each week every grade attends a lesson with our Performing Arts teacher.  During this lesson the children participate in singing, dancing, making music with a wide variety of instruments, music appreciation, music composition and performance.  Children look forward to these sessions where they develop their skills not only in music but by using their imagination, ideas and feelings to create, make and present.  They also complement the program of the classroom teachers exploring the music of a different culture or period of history.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION

Every two years we hold a school production in which every child in the school is involved over two nights in August.  2010 is scheduled for our next production.  The production is usually held at the George Woods Perfoming Arts Centre at Yarra Valley Grammar School, however, we may hold this next event in our new Sports and Arts facility if it is ready.

CHALLENGE AND OPPORTUNITY

As part of our extra-curricula Challenge and Opportunity program, we offer a wide variety of optional music experiences.

CHOIR

We have over 80 children in our two choirs - Performing Choir and Junior Choir.  Our Choir has performed at Federation Square twice this year, the Oxfam Concert, Open Night, Christmas Carols, musical evernings, and every Monday morning at assembly.

BOYS ENSEMBLE

This is a new opportunity this year and the senior boys sound wonderful performing at school functions.

DRAMA GROUP

This very popular lunchtime activity has a group writing, composing, singing, acting, designing props and costumes and performing their own play.  This is performed for a very enthusiastic school community.

SONGWRITING GROUP

This is a lunchtime activity for senior students who use Garage Band to compose their own musical material and perform it at assemblies.

HIGHLAND DANCING

We are fortunate to have a very keen staff member who is an expert in Highland Dancing and runs a lunchtime session for some very enthusiastic girls and boys.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC AND DANCE - private tuition

We also offer an extensive user-pays program in Instrumental Music and Dance (Hip Hop).  These sessions are run for half and hour during the school day and are run in small groups.  We use Wonnies Music for all areas except violin and piano tuition.  Concerts are held through the year for parents to attend and individual children perform at assemblies.

Tuition is available at present in piano, violin, keyboard, drums, guitar, woodwind and hip-hop.
