From the Art Room: Layers of Identity

Our Grade 5/6 students explored identity and creativity through bold, mixed-media self-portraits - each one as unique as the artist behind it.

This vibrant and highly personal Visual Arts project undertaken by our Senior students created striking mixed-media self-portraits that celebrate individuality and creative expression. The process began with students carefully composing and posing for a photograph that reflected their personality. These images became the foundation of their artwork, printed onto A3 paper and then meticulously traced onto a laminating pouch using black permanent marker to capture each student’s unique features.

From there, the creativity truly began to unfold. Students built their backgrounds in layered stages, starting with expressive, free-flowing painting to establish colour and mood. They then added depth and interest through stencilling techniques, before refining their designs with intricate paint pen details.

To bring balance to their compositions, students painted the negative space surrounding their portraits in a solid pastel colour. They then collaged carefully chosen words over the top - adding another layer of meaning and giving insight into their personalities, values, and interests.

In the final stage, all elements were brought together and laminated, creating a polished and cohesive finished piece. The result is a stunning display of colour, texture, and self-expression that reflects both the artistic skills and the individuality of each student.

This project was inspired by creative ideas shared by Art Teacher Life, and we thank them for sparking such an engaging and meaningful learning experience. Inspiration also came from Melbourne street artist “Paink”, who has created murals of sporting and entertainment celebrities around the city. These portraits are based on this style of busy, detailed sections, surrounded by pale, painted backgrounds.

And a very big thank you to Mrs Shaw for continuing to provide Kalinda students with opportunities to explore the arts in different ways. We are incredibly proud of the thought, effort, and creativity our students have demonstrated - these artworks are truly something special!
