Since 2014, Kalinda Primary School has proudly delivered the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, offering hands-on learning experiences that bring food education to life for our Year 3 and 4 students.
Each week, students roll up their sleeves in the kitchen and garden, working together to grow, harvest, prepare, and share delicious seasonal meals. The program not only supports healthy eating habits but also builds life skills, teamwork, and an appreciation for fresh, sustainable food.
Our program aims to:
Encourage a love of food through fun, flavour, and texture—engaging all five senses.
Promote good food choices naturally, without labelling foods as ‘healthy’ or ‘unhealthy’.
Reinforce practical skills in planting, harvesting, and cooking that students can try at home.
Plan meals based on fresh, seasonal produce grown in our garden.
Introduce students to a wide variety of herbs, vegetables, and fruits at their peak.
Celebrate culinary diversity and inspire curiosity about food from around the world.
Expand vocabulary related to food, gardening, cooking techniques, and sensory experiences.
Emphasise that food should be delicious, prepared with care, and shared with joy.
Conclude each session with a shared meal, bringing everyone together around the table.
Our Kitchen Garden Program thrives with the help of volunteers. Whether you have a green thumb or love to cook, your timeand support make a real difference. Volunteers in the kitchen get to sample the tasty meals prepared by the students, while garden helpers enjoy time outdoors, assisting with planting, maintenance, and harvesting.
If you’d like to get involved, please speak to your child’s teacher or contact Kelly, our Kitchen Garden specialist, directly via the office. All volunteers are required to have a current Working with Children Check.
